Focus and Scope

Thank you for considering the Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery (APN) for the publication of your original academic research or case report.

Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery is a tri-annual open-access peer- reviewed medical online journal established in 2019 as the official publication of the Brazilian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (https://sbnped.com.br/). Our aim is to directly improve pediatric neurosurgery health research by increasing clinical understanding through case reports and clinical academic research, which are the journal’s main scope.

APN accepts the following types of scholarly academic-scientific contributions: Review articles; Original articles; Clinical case reports; Technical notes; Clinical images and videos. All these contributions are peer-reviewed by at least two ad-hoc reviewers. APN also accepts other contributions, such as Letter to the Editor and Historical Vignettes, Obituaries, which are not peer-reviews. Please check the details of each contribution type on the Submissions page.

We welcome the scholarly contributions described above from all areas in Pediatric Neurosurgery, especially:

• Any clinical case or procedure which illustrates an important best practice teaching message;
• Any clinical case or procedure which illustrates the appropriate use of an important clinical guideline or systematic review.

As well as academic-scientific papers analyzing:

• The management of novel or very uncommon diseases
• A common disease presenting in an uncommon way
• An uncommon disease masquerading as something more common
• Cases which expand understanding of disease pathogenesis
• Cases where the teaching point is based on an error
• Cases which allow us to re-think established medical lore
• Unreported adverse effects of interventions (drug, procedural, or other).

Authors should kindly note that submission implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting or symposium.

As healthcare professionals, authors, and publishers ourselves, the APN team believe in the value of case reports, and we know how hard they can be to write and publish. Our aim is to make this process simple. If you are not sure if your case is suitable, if you experience any problems with the publication process, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact the APN team at any stage (email: secretaria@sbnped.com.br).

When writing your paper, please consider that articles are intended to  “…disseminate the best clinical practice, to examine important common as well as uncommon clinical scenarios, and to illustrate and inform the use of important clinical guidelines and systematic reviews.”

All papers, especially clinical cases, should be reported in a way that provides evidence that adequate steps have been taken to minimize harm, to avoid coercion or exploitation, to protect the confidentiality, to minimize the risk of physical and psychological damage, and to respect autonomy.

Once the submission materials have been prepared according to the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the online platform by clicking on “Make a Submission” on this website.

MAKE A NEW SUBMISSION

 

Types of submissions accepted

• Original Article may include randomized controlled trials, intervention studies, studies of screening and diagnostic test, outcome studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, case-control series, and surveys with high response rate. For the specific type of articles such as randomized controlled trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, etc., please properly follow the guidelines as described in CONSRORT, STROBE, PRISMA. • Clinical Case Report contains single cases or series of cases or more condensed information on clinical or experimental studies. Please follow the CARE guideline (https://www.equator-network.org/). The key elements are:

• Letter to the Editor will usually address articles published in the journal or comment upon recent scientific advances of general interest.
• Clinical Images
  • Clinical images are pictures that illustrate a key clinical finding that can be presented in the form of a question. Once again, the images do not have to be unusual but have to convey an important message.

• Clinical videos
  • Videos are a very good way to describe clinical procedures that are crucial in all aspects of healthcare. Our view again is that these procedures do not have to be novel or unusual, but they need to reflect best practice and must be accompanied by an illustrative video segment

• Technical Notes

  • Technical Notes introduce new surgical modalities or variants of existing techniques. Follow-up and outcome need to be clearly stated.

• Historical Vignettes, Obituaries, Etc.

  • We consider papers that describe the key contributions of individuals or trace the development of disease concepts.

 

Frequency of Publication

Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery is published three times per year.

 

Open Access Statement

Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) definition of open access.

Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery is a free of charge journal for article processing as well article submission.

After acceptance of the article, a contribution of US$7.00 is required to generate a permanent Digital object identifier (DOI) 

 

Self-archiving Policy

Authors of articles published in Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery are allowed to self-archive for storage and access the preprint (submitted version), author post-print (accepted version prior to final publishing), and the journal’s post-print (final published version). For further information, please check the journal’s policy on DIADORIM.

 

Digital Preservation

This journal uses LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) to ensure the long-term preservation of Web-based scholarly publications in the event that Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery ceases publishing temporarily or if the journal stops being published.

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.

The LOCKSS preservation is done via the PKP Preservation Network (https://pkp.sfu.ca/pkp-pn/)
